Limiting Extreme Oil Consumption in the Automotive Sector
Description of the situation
Under the pressure of increasingly stringent emission requirements in the automotive industry, light, high-revving turbo engines with low cylinder capacity have become the standard. In theory, this is a positive development; however, in practice, these engines are prone to malfunctions and require frequent maintenance.
The piston often has compression rings and an oil scraper ring (the lower piston ring). The compression rings are responsible for compressing the air in the engine, while the oil scraper ring is supposed to return the oil back into the sump. If the oil scraper ring is contaminated or clogged, oil remains on the cylinder walls. This oil burns along with the fuel, leading to oil consumption and excessive smoke production from the car. Excessive oil consumption shortens the lifespan of the catalytic converter or particulate filter. This severe contamination is often caused by a combination of factors such as frequently making short car journeys and the specific construction of modern engines, which often have thinner and sometimes lower-placed scraper rings. This results in less friction surface and a greater chance of carbon deposits. This carbon build-up frequently results in very high oil consumption. 1 liter per 1000 KM is not unusual, and even 1 liter per 300 KM occurs. Engines are economically written off, or an expensive engine overhaul is required.
Eurol Additive-S Flush was originally developed for heavily contaminated diesel engines, such as those in trucks and earth-moving machinery. Additive-S Flush does not damage the wet belt and can therefore also be used effectively and safely in gasoline/diesel automotive engines. For engine maintenance, the Additive-S Flush or the Eurol Engine Flush can be added to the oil before the oil change. This has the same effect as an engine flush by a flush machine.
In cases of extreme oil consumption due to carbon deposits on the scraper rings, the Additive-S should be poured onto the pistons, which requires removing the sump pan. The deposits will gradually dissolve, and the contamination will disappear. After treating with the Additive-S Flush, it is not immediately apparent to what extent the oil consumption has improved, but the procedure can be repeated without problems.
