Nasser Al-Attiyah was well aware of the risks a marathon stage bring with them. On the first leg of 453 kilometer Al-Attiyah got a puncture early on and took it easy from then on. “We wanted to avoid breaking things today”, Al-Attiyah commented afterwards. “We're still close to Stéphane and there's a long way to go. It's hard to beat a buggy with a 4x4." Al-Attiyah finished in P4 and is still in second overall. Shameer Variawa was the next best driver of Toyota Gazoo Racing. He ended up in P15, Giniel de Villiers lost a bit more time and reached the end of the stage in P22. He lost most of his time due to 4 punctures. In the end he had to wait for a fellow competitor to borrow one.
There was not a lot to talk about the stage for Tim and Tom Coronel. The Dutchmen put up great pace and had a near perfect day, although they had a bit of a scare when they reached the bivouac with a tank that was almost empty. The result was great: 25th place for the twin brothers.
While the Russian competitors are dominant in the truck category, Martin van den Brink is next best. On Sunday, the 50 year old from Harskamp finished in P7. “We had a solid day without any problems”, Van den Brink said. “There was a lot of sand, but also stones. We managed to stay out of trouble and it’s good to see we finished in front of the Tatra’s. We can only be happy right now.”
Mitchel van den Brink lost quite a bit of time in the early part of the stage, but is still well underway in this years Dakar.
Trouble hit the Riwald Dakar Team on Sunday. Pascal de Baar had a problem early on and lost over an hour, but managed to get going again. De Baar still managed to finish in P16. Gert Huzink also faced problems, it is yet unknown if he’s able to finish the stage.
