Eurol in Dakar 2022: Al-Attiyah second in fast and furious second stage

After a tough opening stage of the 2022 Dakar Rally, the second stage on Monday was a bit more straightforward for the Eurol supported teams. Nasser Al-Attiyah finished in a solid second place while the other competitors found their feet again.

Al-Attiyah

Al-Attiyah had the honour to open the stage after he won big time on Sunday. Again, the stage was full of big dunes and sandy plateaus but this time there were also more fast tracks where the speed of the Toyota Hilux T1+ was utilized at the fullest. Al-Attiyah had great speed during the stage, but was caught by on of his rivals and had to settle for second spot in the second stage. Overall he still leads the car class.

Lategan, De Villiers, Variawa

After a tough opening stage of the Dakar Henk Lategan came back into the top 10 on the second stage. The South African had to start in the pack due to the problems on Sunday, but managed to get home in 7th place. He just finished before Giniel de Villiers. He had another solid day at the office and climbed up another place in the overall standings to 4th right now. Shameer Variawa finished in P28 and won several places compared to his starting position.

Bernhard ten Brinke

Bernhard ten Brinke was able to hit back after a tough stage. The Dutchman ended in 10th place and was happy: “It was a very fast stage with a lot of sand and dunes, we didn’t have a lot of stoney tracks. It was really fast but it was our chance to really push today and so we did. We followed Mattias Ekström who had similar pace to us, that went very well. I’m satisfied about today after what we had yesterday.”

Mammoet Team De Rooy Iveco

Martin van den Brink topped the Eurol supported trucks in the second stage. The Mammoet Rallysport ace pushed on and finished in P9. His son Mitchel van den Brink lost a bit of time early on but finished in time for sunset and still managed to get into the top 20 on the stage classification.

Riwald Dakar Team

Gert Huzink had bad luck on Sunday, but hit back on the stage to Al Artawiyah. He ended up in P13 with his fast assistance Pascal de Baar two place back in 15th spot.
